Team VA Athletes Travel to The VA Showcase Meet

Updated: Jun 17, 2021

Team VA will be competing in the first competition of the 2021 indoor season at the 2021 VA Showcase indoor track meet. On Saturday, January 15th, and Sunday, Jan. 16th at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Team VA begins the road to the national championships.

Due to Covid this will be the first time Team VA begins its indoor campaign in January as oppose to late November and the competition will be fierce.

Because of the restrictions on sporting events there have been far fewer competitions this year which means more competitors participate in hosted competitions. This makes for a national championship level of performances at all meets .

Team VA will be well represented in the pole vault and 300m, 500m, 1000m.

In the pole vault, Cailey Spanitz will be making her first appearance as a Team VA athlete. Spanitz, who recently improved her personal best from 10'6" to 12', will be looking to improve on her performance as she tests her high school SR indoor season.

Perry Irons, also a high school SR, will be competing in the 300m. As a high school JR, Perry sped to a personal best of 43.49s. A Bucknell signee, Perry will face stiff competition from a field of over 240 athletes. She will be looking to make a statement in her first meet of the year.

In the 500m, high school FR Veronica Gula will be returning for her second year with Team VA. After a solid, but short, cross country season Veronica will open her indoor season in the 500m. Gula will be looking to set a strong time for her first indoor 500m.

Juli Gonzales, a high school JR, is also in her first year as a Team VA member. Over the last six weeks Juli began preparing for her debut in the 800m. While Juli will not be sprinting an 800m this weekend, she will compete in the 1000m. Juli will be looking to improve on her personal best of 3:07.48s.

Overall Team VA looks to a strong opener for their indoor season.
